My first dog

01 My first dog

Dietrich. She was my first dog. She was given to me by my step sister when she was nearly 6 years old. She felt herself to be pretty much set in her ways. One of those ways was nipping virtually everyone in her presence once, to sensitize them and cause them to be concerned about her. This was a dog that loved to be nasty. There was something about her though that I loved, and my step sister recognized the connection between us and in a moment of generosity gave me the dog.

My first dog.

Here's my nephew's favorite story about Dietrich. We were traveling in Canada our first summer together and I had just picked up a hitch-hiker. It was Dietrich's way to bark at all who came near the camper, and certainly all who entered. Usually she would settle after I insisted she be quiet. This time however she continued to growl and when this guy looked at her, snarl and show teeth. He looked OK to me, so again, I insisted she retire to the back of the camper.

Here's the punch line. At a traffic light, the guy grabs my Nikon Camera and jumps from the camper. I can't believe it. I call Dietrich out and point her in the direction of my fleeing felon and release her to do "her thing". The guy gets about half a block away before Dietrich goes airborn and catches him on his thigh. She spends about 10 seconds impressing her bite into his leg before I catch up to them and call her off. I let the creep scamper off, clutching his leg, retrieve my camera from the ground, return to the camper with Dietrich and pay tribute to my dog with a left over hamburger from last nights dinner. My nephews ask me to tell them this story over and over again. When I get to the part where she goes airborn, they're out of their seats cheering.
